Five people have died while three others sustained serious injuries after the vehicles they were traveling in collided in Chisamba District along the Great North Road.
The accident occurred on Monday, August 28, 2023 around 16:30 hours at Trotters area in Chisamba District.
According to Zambia Police Service deputy public relations officer Danny Mwale, the deceased, all male, have not yet been identified including the driver of the Hino Ranger bearing registration number ABR 2565.
Mr Mwale indicated in a statement that only one victim from the SINO Truck and trailer bearing registration numbers AIC 6508 and BAR 9601 was Identified as Hendrix Hamainza, 30 of Kanyama Compound in Lusaka.
The SINO Truck and trailer, belonging to Kazumba Trucking was driven by Sadok Tembo, 35 of Makeni in Lusaka and had three male passengers on board heading towards Lusaka.
Mr Tembo escaped with minor injuries and received treatment from Liteta Hospital and was later discharged.
The HINO Ranger was extensively damaged while the other truck had its cabin damaged.
Mr Mwale noted that preliminary investigations revealed that the accident happened when the driver of the Hino Ranger with four passengers on board, while driving towards Chibombo District, failed to keep to his near-side lane and went to hit into the SINO Truck and trailer which was moving in the opposite direction.
“Five people including the driver of the HINO Ranger sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead upon arrival at Chisamba District Hospital. Their bodies were deposited in the same Hospital mortuary awaiting identification and while the injured victims are receiving treatment at Liteta Hospital,” Mr Mwale said.
